What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that is near impossible to identify without a proper detector. It is caused by fuels not burning completely, including wood, gasoline, coal, propane, natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. This unburned fuel can come from anything from clothes dryers, water heaters, and ovens to ranges, a fire-burning fireplace, or a car left running in a closed garage.
When carbon monoxide passes through the lungs, it enters the red blood cells and binds to hemoglobin in the same place as oxygen. This forms carboxyhemoglobin, which interferes with the transportation and gas exchange of oxygen in the red blood cells.
The Inspector is the guaranteed best portable CO detector on the market. Use it as a simple Carbon Monoxide Meter to monitor the air, or purchase the full analyzer accessory kit to use it as a complete carbon monoxide combustion analyzer. HVAC Technicians, EMTs, Fire Departments, home inspectors, pilots, property owners and industrial users all prefer the Inspector because of its high quality and low cost.
CO detectors are designed to measure CO levels over time and sound an alarm before dangerous levels of CO accumulate in an environment, giving people adequate warning to safely ventilate the area or evacuate. Some system-connected detectors also alert a monitoring service that can dispatch emergency services if necessary.
While CO detectors do not serve as smoke detectors and vice versa, dual smoke/CO detectors are also sold. Smoke detectors detect the smoke generated by flaming or smoldering fires, whereas CO detectors detect and warn people about dangerous CO buildup caused, for example, by a malfunctioning fuel-burning device. In the home, some common sources of CO include open flames, space heaters, water heaters, blocked chimneys or running a car inside a garage.
Why is Measuring CO2 Important?
Indoor gardeners, hydroponic growers and indoor greenhouse growers are constantly looking for new ways to grow bigger and healthier plants. They know that monitoring carbon dioxide, humidity and temperature is critical to achieve the best results. Fortunately, it is no longer necessary to purchase three different products – our meters do it all.
Beverage & Hospitality
CO2 storage safety alarms protect customers, employees and emergency first-responders near stored carbon dioxide. A leak anywhere in a stored CO2 delivery system can quickly fill an enclosed area with potentially dangerous CO2 levels. That’s why CO2 safety CO2 alarms are critical in breweries, wineries, beverage dispensing areas, restaurants, fast food establishments, dry ice storage, storage tanks, laboratories, or anywhere CO2 is stored or produced in high volume.
Personal CO2 Safety in Confined Spaces
Carbon dioxide, in the form of underground off-gassing, dry ice or liquid CO2 delivery systems, or portable heaters can pose a potential deadly threat. Because it is odorless and colorless, workers can easily be overcome by high levels of CO2 in enclosed spaces. Our battery operated and portable CO2 monitors with alarms are used in the construction industry, by breweries, machine shops, garages and many other businesses as a low-cost way to warn employees to stay out of enclosed areas with high carbon dioxide levels.
Indoor Air Quality
When it comes to indoor air quality, carbon dioxide is the “canary in the mineshaft”. As CO2 levels rise, the quantity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors and microorganisms in the air rise too. That’s why HVAC engineers use carbon dioxide level transmitters to regulate airflow in modern office buildings.
In addition to air quality, a carbon dioxide can also affect your health. Studies have shown high CO2 concentrations affect your ability to concentrate on tasks. If you find yourself sleepy in the office or the classroom, it may be a buildup of CO2.
